This girl-fronted “dark pop” band plays Birmingham tonight by way of London UK.
This is a rare chance for me to experience a newish band with the same taste in dark rock and grunge as I do. I will go out on a limb and speak for Adam as well by saying that (OMG!1!!) anything that is even vaguely compared to My Bloody Valentine and is playing within 20 miles of my house is worth a listen.
Congrats to all the winners from the TDS tix giveaway earlier this week. See you guys there!
Also, if you’re looking for some pre-show tracks, my favorites are “This Ship Was Built to Last”, “Love is an Unfamiliar Name” and “The Step and the Walk”. All these suggestions come from a giant Queens of the Stone Age, Lush and PJ Harvey fan; you’ll definitely hear the influences.
P.S. Chris is of the opinion that you guys should buy us some drinks. Scrooge! If you do want to introduce yourselves though, I’ll be wearing some fashion of a bham.fm sticker. So yay!
WHITNEY: The Duke Spirit’s music is often described as “dark pop”. Is this a pretty good descriptor or do you guys envision the sound differently?
DUKE SPIRIT: Is it? Well OK, Dark Pop sounds alright.
WHITNEY: Leila Moss (lead vox) has been quoted as saying that you guys felt “at sea and making a record that [you] didn’t know for certain would be released” in reference to “Cuts Across the Land”. What sort of redemption did you all gain after the successful American release, 2006 tour and performance at Coachella?
DUKE SPIRIT: We often speak about that time. Coachella especially became a seminal moment for us. Our current labels both here and in the UK are our home now because of our performance. That show became “Two Fingers” to the doubters and strengthened our belief in ourselves.
WHITNEY: The Duke Spirit has shown an affinity for covering the Pixies. What are the band’s favorites to play live?
DUKE SPIRIT: We have only gotten to cover one Pixie song, Into the White. They are a great band. One we all take influence from.

It wasn’t a particularly long limb for you to climb out on; I completely agree.
