While I admit I’m a little disproportionately bitter about missing Mr. Biggs‘ birthday party Friday night at Mike’s Crossroads, I still listened to 95.7 JAMZ in the car today. Since Barack Obama launched his new gig as President Elect, it’s been a Moet-fueled party on the airwaves. I must say, I vote yes on Proposition “Champagne for his Campaign”.
Young Jeezy’s “My President is Black” is probably the one that gets the most play, but there is an ongoing list of rappers vying for Obama’s hypeman-in-chief position. Before they get too comfortable with the prospect of bringing “hood” to the White House though, here is an official statement Obama gave Rolling Stone about his current opinion of the state of rap: “I know Jay-Z. I know Ludacris. I know Russell Simmons. I know a bunch of these guys. They are great talents and great businessmen, which is something that doesn’t get emphasized enough. It would be nice if I could have my daughters listen to their music without me worrying that they were getting bad images of themselves.”
So with a hopeful heart and in the spirit of advancing Obama’s food for (rappers’) thought, I humbly submit a gathered list of hypertopical songs to get crunk & democratic to…
- “Election Night” by Nas, who according to Stereohyped was touring in Norway during Election Day. The first time voter was so excited that he sat down to record this song early Tuesday morning and had it sent off to MTV by the afternoon.
- “History” by Jay-Z
- “It’s A New Day” by Will.i.am (of Anderson Cooper hologram fame)
- “Changes” by Common
- “Pop Champagne For Barack” by Ron Browz feat. Busta Rhymes
- Ludacris’s “Politics as Usual“
