City Stages asks the city for a bailout

doobie brothers 300x239 City Stages asks the city for a bailout

UPDATE: The bailout just passed city council by a margin of 4-2-1.

Also, the Weekly reminds us that “Man, Sloss Furnaces is getting screwed today. City Stages bailout came from their appropriation, as did funds for new community info flyers.”

Wow.

What do you guys think? Sound off in the comments.

In the words of David Bazan (Pedro the Lion), “If it isn’t making dollars, then it isn’t making sense. If you aren’t moving units, then you’re not worth the expense.”

The allegory on life as an independent musician dealing with a major label is not lost on me, but when George McMillan begs the city for 250k due to “loss of corporate sales”… we have a problem.

One ray of light for Birmingham though. You’ll notice the Birmingham News is writing this. They are a major sponsor of the event and so it’s nice to see some attempted accountability/transparency that’s becoming of a Pulitzer Prize winning newspaper.

Without further ado, here is the story itself and here are a few highlights:

  • About 15 companies that traditionally buy tickets didn’t buy them this year.
  • In return for a financial boost from the city, City Stages would give free admission to all people age 60 and older, McMillan said. That’s in addition to free admission the festival already gives children ages 12 and younger.
  • The city budgeted $300,000 for City Stages this year, and the new funding request would be in addition to that amount.
  • Organizers say the money is needed to make up for soft corporate ticket sales. But the council is divided on the request, with some saying the city already supports the festival and should not give any more.

And as always (I don’t have to tell you guys), take some time to read the “interesting” comments under the article on al.com. Alot of them are PURE gold. I’m not saying I’ve seen someone threaten a dog’s life, accuse Jesus of tax fraud or call for a revolt ala the French Revolution… I’m just saying I’ve totally seen all of that.

Also, look at this picture of the Doobie Brothers. ISN’T THAT A TREASURE?!

  • i should have added: quite a few festivals are struggling this year, and some, including LANGERADO, have cancelled. yeah, the vote was late on this bailout thing, and you would think the city stages coordinators could have planned this in advance. but i wonder when they sell the majority of their tickets each year. it could be that they just didn't know. i'm not trying to make excuses for them. i have no idea who they are. but there may be an explanation. and the lack of ticket sales is a nationwide issue.
  • well, bonnaroo was last weekend anyway. but when these festivals are on the same weekend, joey t, city stages loses ticket sales, and i bet it's not an insignificant number.

of course, we really need better acts. it's like the event coordinators tried to make this the lamest gathering of has-beens since the 1903 Salon de Paris.
  • Since Cayenne Creative handles both Bonnaroo and now City Stages, there is a noncompete clause in effect. Essentially, City Stages is not able to book ANY acts performing at Bonnaroo. That sucks :/
  • it sucks, but even if it wasn't the same group handling both, it's not uncommon for festivals to book bands and attach non-compete clauses to their agreements. there are a lot of factors involved, like popularity of the band, size of the festival, proximity of other festivals, etc.

what sucks the most is that the city stages coordinators seem to have little idea how to choose bands. it shouldn't be hard to attract the right bands to a festival in birmingham. it's not like there's no precedent. just consult with BJCC, oak mountain, alabama theatre, workplay, zydeco, and bottletree, and there you have advice on what kinds of bands sell tickets and what kinds of stages and lineups you need to get together to make money. that's a broad spectrum of popularity and style.

    AAAAAAAAAAAH! THE JIG IS UP!

The Over-60 crowd gets in FREE?! I'm pretty sure that's where all their tickets sales were - the former groupies for all of the classic rock acts.
  • Joey_t
I don't think a 4 day camping festival competes with City Stages. Fucking Alabama Adventure is competing over acts with city stages.
  • sorry, PhiL with an L
  • you're right, Phi. 'There has got to be definitely' a better weekend for CITY STAGES. i always enjoyed the late may city stages--if not for the bands, then at least the weather. the risk of unseasonably cool nights wasn't ideal for all musicians, but GILLIAN WELCH and DAVID RAWLINGS set aside the shivers for a low 60's (or high 50's) set that was more memorable than most.

yeah, the lineup this year blows. bham.fm has the best show in town this weekend.

This is ridiculous. Let's all just admit that Bonnaroo has killed City Stages. Either change the date so the non-compete isn't a problem, or bury this bloated, stinking corpse. I wouldn't let my deaf dog go to City Stages (if I had one), the lineup is atrocious.
  • aaron, i googled "there has got to be definitely" in quotation marks, and you may be the first person ever to use those words in that order.

by the way, i am not "Matt." i stay away from proper-ing my nouns.

i love the term 'bailout'. it's so en vogue right now. would we have called this a 'bailout' 10 years ago when the economy wasn't in the shape i'm in? i don't know. i'm guessing no, but i'm not an ECON guy or whatever you have to be to know the answer. answers? bailout 10 years ago, or would we say something like 'loan'? or what's the republican favorite--'handouts'?

    i need a handout.
  • Wait...they just now asked for that money when the festival is this weekend?
  • Yeah, Bryan. I didn't tell you guys earlier, but all SECRET STAGES performers need to bail me out. I haven't been able to eat BK chicken sandwiches or afford Mtn. Dews for months.

    ;)
  • Matt, you may be right... but Aaron's got a point.
There's an pretty sizable agreement as far as advertising and coverage between the two parties.
I can't imagine their being much dissent within the paper's ranks as far as opinions on lineups, sponsors, accepting taxpayer money etc.

    Who knows...
  • Aaron
There has got to be definitely an agreement in place as far as coverage and the way any news is disseminated.
  • I don't think The Birmingham News is a City Stages sponsor this year. At least not a "major sponsor." http://www.citystages.org/sponsors/
