it sucks, but even if it wasn't the same group handling both, it's not uncommon for festivals to book bands and attach non-compete clauses to their agreements. there are a lot of factors involved, like popularity of the band, size of the festival, proximity of other festivals, etc.

what sucks the most is that the city stages coordinators seem to have little idea how to choose bands. it shouldn't be hard to attract the right bands to a festival in birmingham. it's not like there's no precedent. just consult with BJCC, oak mountain, alabama theatre, workplay, zydeco, and bottletree, and there you have advice on what kinds of bands sell tickets and what kinds of stages and lineups you need to get together to make money. that's a broad spectrum of popularity and style.

i should have added: quite a few festivals are struggling this year, and some, including LANGERADO, have cancelled. yeah, the vote was late on this bailout thing, and you would think the city stages coordinators could have planned this in advance. but i wonder when they sell the majority of their tickets each year. it could be that they just didn't know. i'm not trying to make excuses for them. i have no idea who they are. but there may be an explanation. and the lack of ticket sales is a nationwide issue.

Since Cayenne Creative handles both Bonnaroo and now City Stages, there is a noncompete clause in effect. Essentially, City Stages is not able to book ANY acts performing at Bonnaroo. That sucks :/

well, bonnaroo was last weekend anyway. but when these festivals are on the same weekend, joey t, city stages loses ticket sales, and i bet it's not an insignificant number.

of course, we really need better acts. it's like the event coordinators tried to make this the lamest gathering of has-beens since the 1903 Salon de Paris.
